It's just that it's not precisely "quick"Ĭreating 2 one-GB file containers on an internal mechanical disk, one with and one without the "quick format" option. I came to the conclusion that "Quick format" DOES work. Ok, after further testing and reading and re-reading what was discussed here: What additional information can I provide to assist you in fixing this issue?ĭesktop PC - Intel i5-4670k processor - 32 GB RAM - Windows 7 installed on a SSD disk - 3 TB mechanical disk for data With "Quick Format" selected, the process doesn't even tell you how long it will take to complete the task, but I left it for about 7 or 8 hours and it didn't finish.Īs I understand it, the Quick format option should take no more than a few minutes, is that correct? I'm guessing that there is something wrong with the code regarding the Quick Format option, at least for file based containers I'm running Veracrypt 1.24 Beta 6, which includes the option of Quick Format for file based volumes, but the amount of time needed for the creation of the volume is huge either with or without the Quick Format option.įor a 3 TB file container, on an internal (mechanical) 3 TB drive, the process says it will take 8 to 10 DAYS, at aprox 3-4 MB/s, without selecting "Quick Format" I can confirm that the Quick Format option for the creation of file containers isn't working in the latest Beta However, i beleive even in the case of quick format it still will consume the amount of disk space chosen during creation (fixed size), it doesn't use dynamic allocation. I havne't personally tested the beta, or this quick format option for file containers as I just wait out the long length process for security reasons, even for 5tb. If you create it on your internal disk (not through usb/wifi), in my experience its faster. As well, if you have a faster disk, such as an SSD use that to create the container on. Preferably if possible use a computer that has better specifications to speed it up, like a gaming computer if you have one or just whatever device you have thats the fastest. Compare how much quicker it is, and wether you want to wait about that additional time to create a 5tb or would rather for security keep it off and wait for the non-quick format to complete which would actually show you progress of the whole process. Test if its about the same time or one is quicker. You should try mesuring the time it takes to create say 1GB container with quick format off, then again with it on. For security it's reccomended not to enable this option, but if you insist on doing so then you can but this isn't something that cant be fixed by veracrypt. Quick format is a new option for file containers in veracrypt 1.24-Beta0, yes it does work however as that page i linked you to describes that issue is due to Windows flusing data to the disk, which can be slow all depending on you machine and disk type.
